Music & Mantra: Asato Ma Sad Gamaya

Music & Mantra: Asato Ma Sad Gamaya

This week’s mantra is sometimes called the verse on reality, or the Pavamana mantra (which means being purified). It comes from one of the oldest Upanishads – the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, which is estimated to have been composed around 700 BCE.  This mantra is a prayer asking that we see beyond the illusion, darkness and death of the small self (the body, mind and ego), so that we might experience the reality of our true Self – formless, eternal and whole. I’ve always felt the transcendent power of this mantra to open me up when I’m feeling small and self absorbed.  Try it with eyes closed, and with the intention to feel and experience the full truth of who you are.

Asato Ma Sad Gamaya
Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya
Mrtyor Ma Amrtam Gamaya

Lead us from untruth to truth.
Lead us from darkness to light.
Lead us from death to immortality.
